Carol Stites Receives Chapter's Volunteer of the Year Award

stites.jpgThe Octavia Thacher Volunteer of the Year Award is presented each year at the Volunteer Appreciation Banquet to honor the Chapter's Volunteer of the Year.  Octavia Thacher gave 81 years of volunteer service to the American Red Cross.  WOW, can you believe that! Mrs. Thacher began her volunteer career with the Red Cross when her 8th grade class at Polk school in Topeka was asked to knit blanket squares for soldiers in World War 1 (1917 for those of us struggling with history.)  She continued her volunteer service knitting for soldiers in World War II.  She worked in blood drives, and helped the community during the 1966 Topeka tornado.  She passed away July 27, 1998.  Her years of enthusiasm and unselfish dedication to the Red Cross are a shining example for all people to follow.  A volunteer who received the Octavia Thacher Volunteer of the Year Award is truly honored.

Volunteers Needed!

Join the Basic Aid Team

Help prepare local 4th graders for Life’s Bumps and Bruises!

bat_logo.jpg
The American Red Cross needs 50 volunteers to teach basic first aid for the Basic Aid Training (BAT) program.  This year, the Red Cross will teach over 1,000 students in the 4th grade in Topeka, Emporia and Manhattan schools the basics of first aid:
  • Check-Call-Care – responding to emergencies
  • Rescue Breathing – What to do when someone is not breathing
  • Ways to prevent and respond to choking emergencies
  • Prevention of wounds and first aid for wounds, nosebleeds, fractures, etc.
  • Prevention and emergency measures for fires and burns
  • Prevention and first aid for poisoning
No teaching experience is necessary and certification in CPR/AED and First aid is not required.  Volunteer assignments will require daytime availability and a time commitment of at least 2.5 hours for each class.  Volunteers can teach one class or more.  The choice is yours.  There will be a one hour training for all BAT instructors.

Contact Sharita Davis at (785) 354-9224 or davissha@usa.redcross.org for more information.

This BAT program is sponsored by the Kansas Health Foundation and the Westar Foundation.

Change a Life. Become a Champion.
